This has presented an emerging problem for satellite operators: how to navigate increasingly crowded orbits. In a domain where everything is moving 10x the speed of a bullet, the impact of a collision is not only catastrophic, but compounding in its ability to propagate into thousands of pieces of debris that multiply the risk to spacecraft. To complicate things further, operators are increasingly developing technologies to intentionally intercept adversarial space assets. This confluence of factors has driven the demand for flexible space operations and the ability to fly in close proximity to other spacecraft. The technology that underpins this capability is what Stellerian has not only been working on, but is now flying.

Space domain awareness has been a hot sector of the industry this year with countless companies developing solutions to improve the monitoring of all objects on-orbit. Traditionally this has been the responsibility of the US Space Force to use ground radar trackers and telescopes to monitor all objects overhead, but with the acceleration in launches, it has increasingly leveraged commercial solutions to meet the growing amount of targets. The release of Stargaze early this year emphasized the problem, and the Andromeda contract mid-year punctuated the growing demand for further solutions. Companies throughout the industry have proposed a variety of solutions, from companies like Arcsec using startrackers onboard satellites, to Peregrine Space using lasers to target and range, to Diffraqtion using quantum cameras to image the entire night sky 10x faster than traditional imagers. What is rare is the ability to bridge that broad spatial monitoring capability with the need to provide close range rendezvous proximity operations (RPO) and the modeling needed to further develop these technologies. That’s where Stellerian has found their fit. Stellerian CEO Cody Waldecker highlights their advantage by explaining: “The most traction we have across defense and commercial is definitely on RPO capabilities. It’s something that’s definitely a big need right now. But space domain awareness is huge too. The largest government budget goes to space traffic management, space domain awareness.”

Stellerian’s Rendering of SDA Simulation

They’ve balanced this dual mandate by providing a variety of products that covers the full range. ATLAS provides long range detection and tracking while ARGUS handles close range monitoring of vehicles that are targeted for intercept. This combination allows them to provide a full solution for identifying targets from a distance, and enabling spacecraft to close the gap for investigation, and potentially intercept. CCO Rodrigo Schmitt explains that “we offer the solution as a software that can be plugged into the right sensors, the right compute, or as a full package solution for companies that don’t even want to deal with preparing the right hardware, the right cameras, the right lenses. And we offer all of that in a single package.” This is a notable offering because most satellites carry imaging and compute solutions even if they’re not intended for space domain awareness. We’ve seen it in the past years from Vantor, and more recently from HEO, but Stellerian allows any satellite with a computer (which is every satellite) and camera to implement their software to enable a critical capability. This ability enables a more flexible implementation of SDA. A monocular imager, whether a star tracker or an observational imager can be used for monitoring when leveraging their software.

This enables a dual use of capabilities that’s been deploying for longer than the recent demand for domain awareness. Any imager could use Stellerian’s software to perform SDA or RPO, but they didn’t stop there. For new imagers that improve capability in either sector, Stellerian also offers products that improve the ability to develop advanced implementations. SICS and MODSAT are two offerings that provide the ability to model the targets for both applications that aid in development. Any solution for RPO requires training on multiple types of targets in order to accommodate for all potential interactions, and that’s where SICS provides artificial targets to train upon. Rod emphasized the demand for such a product: “we needed a tool to be able to generate a ton of data that we could use to create our own models and run tests and everything…[customers said] what about all this data that you’re making? You know, it’s hard to get that. Why don’t you have that as an offering as well?” This question led them to providing their product that enables training of new solutions for object tracking and proximity operations. Whether a customer uses their software to implement a capability, or uses their data to develop their own, Stellerian enables their customers to solve the problem of detecting and interacting with space objects.

Stellerian’s Rendering of RPO Targeting Approach

MODSAT furthers this approach by giving the user an ability to model their mission profile that involves other spacecraft. It’s a demand that’s been growing throughout the year, particularly with the NITE-STAR contracts that have awarded companies advancing the ability for USSF to model spacecraft behavior, and train for operations that interact with them. Rod highlights the fact that “we could train our machine learning and computer vision algorithms internally using an internal tool. So that’s something that we developed as a means of achieving something that is a demand from the government.” This is an in-demand capability as the US government has been responding to the advanced capabilities of adversarial nations to interfere with space operations. The ability to model the behavior of satellites enables the government to better plan for their interactions with foreign satellites. Offering this capability in the same package that provides live SDA and RPO capabilities is what sets Stellerian apart. They can address the broad mission planning challenges, along with providing solutions that can enable any satellite with an imager to provide monitoring and intercept capabilities.

While the current demand is coming from the government in the form of SDA and intercept capability, the technology that Stellerian is developing is key to the future of space mobility and dynamism. Their software enables the ability for satellites to perform on-orbit operations such as de-orbiting debris, refueling, and in-space assembly and manufacturing. If you have the need to do on-orbit operations that require dynamic adaptation such as conjunction avoidance, or more advanced capabilities, then be sure to check out Stellerian! They’ve launched their first software onboard Transporter-18 to demonstrate their capabilities, and are ready to expand it to the most pressing challenges in the space industry.

Watch the full interview on YouTube

Stellerian launches the first flight of their sensing and autonomy platform to improve space responsivity Space has become so heavily populated that the US Space Force literally ran out of numbers to track all objects in-orbit.
